On October 18th: We celebrate the erection of the Christmas tree

In October, construction of the world's largest Christmas tree traditionally begins in Dortmund's city center. We're celebrating the laying of the foundation stone shortly after the initial work begins:

There will be snacks and drinks available – treat yourself to the first Christmas market mulled wine of the year a month before the market opens. You'll also be doing something good: The proceeds from both stalls will go entirely to the Aktion Lichtblicke eV association via our partner Radio 91.2. The association supports children whose families are in material, financial, or emotional need.

Since 1996, the Christmas tree has been one of the attractions of Dortmund's Christmas Town, which begins on November 17th. The tree's lights are switched on shortly thereafter, the day after Remembrance Sunday. When fully illuminated, the lighting elements have a total power consumption of approximately 8 kW and are made entirely of energy-saving LEDs . A new automatic switching system adjusts the lighting to the time of day this year to further reduce power consumption. As in the previous year, DEW21 supplies the green energy to the Christmas Town.
